HOMEWORK
This week in our homework we are looking at how
children in China are the same and different from children in Brookline. We
read a book and watched a movie that shows a day in the life of the 2 children
in China (one in an urban area and one in a rural area). Students will use the
Venn Diagram to show the similarities and differences between themselves and
the children in the movie and book.
FIELD
TRIPS
Thank you for your quick response to our field trip
request. Please let me know if you need a new form.
Many parents have asked about chaperoning the trip to
Wheelock Family Theater. We will need parents to volunteer to walk with us to
and from the theater. Unfortunately, the theater is booked with many schools
during these performances, so we can only get enough tickets for students and
teachers. Please let us know if you would like to walk with us, though.

SCIENCE: We did an experiment this
week to explore the concept of a cavity. We used an apple to represent a tooth.
We poked a hole in the skin of the apple. The next day, we cut the apple in
half and discovered that air got into the apple through the hole and turned the
apple brown. This is similar to germs getting into a small hole in the tooth
enamel which causes a cavity.
COMMUNITY: We wrapped up our unit on
China this week, with a performance from Boston’s Woo Ching White Crane group.
They came and preformed the Lion Dance and
We also learned more about life in China by reading
books and watching a video. We discussed ways that children’s lives are the
same and different in Brookline and China.
MATH: We
explored time to the half hour this week. We discussed how you can say 12:30 or
half past 12. We also practiced looking at the hour hand (short) and minute
hand (long) to figure out the time.
