HOMEWORK
This week students will reflect on all of their progress in first grade. Students will also look for objects with a line of symmetry and practicing finding half of a collection of objects.

1MC WISH LIST
  • Tissues
  • Clorox wipes
  • Potatoes
MATH
This week we learned about symmetry. A line of symmetry is the imaginary line where you could fold the image or object in half and both halves would match exactly.

After studying symmetry, we were able to explore the concept of half. We looked at creating half on an object, like a circle or a square, and we looked at finding half of a collection of objects, like half of 10. We will continue to work with halves and fractions in the coming weeks.

SCIENCE
Many more beetles have emerged this week.  Next week, students will have the opportunity to bring their beetles home or add their beetles to the class collection so they have some friends, or to. Please see the attached description of caring for beetles at home. We have discussed that this is a family decision and both options are great for the beetles.

We got caterpillars in our classroom. We will observe these caterpillars as they turn into Painted Lady Butterflies.

Word Wall Words

can’t      don’t      won’t      didn’t

We will continue to study contractions next week. In these words, we squish two words together and the apostrophe takes the place of a letter or letters (do not becomes don’t).

CONVERSATION STARTERS
·       What is a line of symmetry?
·       What are some things that are symmetrical?
·       How can you find half of 10? 14? 6?
·       What did you observe when you looked at your caterpillar?
·       How do you know if a number is odd or even?
·       What is a contraction? How to you make a contraction?
·       What is your favorite game that we’ve played in PE class?
·       How has your mealworm or beetle changed?
