IMPORTANT DATES

·       Thursday, May 9^th: walking field trip to Wheelock Family Theater

·       Tuesday, May 21^st: First grade concert, 8:20 in the auditorium

·       Wednesday, May 22^nd: Museum of Science comes to present Insects to first grade.

FIELD TRIP ON THURSDAY

Please send your child with a snack in packaging that can be thrown out. Children will carry their own snack with them to Wheelock Family Theater, we will eat snack when we arrive and we will not bring any food or packaging with us into the theater.

Please check the weather and make sure your child is dressed comfortably for the walk to and from the theater.

HOMEWORK

This week’s homework will ask students to review and use our Word Wall Words.

Students will also practice adding doubles, and using the Doubles + 1 strategy.

Thank you so much for taking the time to work with your child on last week’s Fire Escape plan homework. Brookline Fire Department has asked that families discuss these plans and the material from their Fire Safety presentation.

This week we are talking about ways to make the long a sound. The letters ai and ay make the a sounds like in rain and pay, We also learned the rule, “When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking.” So when, ai are together, we hear the a, when oa are together, we hear o.

MATH

We are taking our knowledge of fact families and exploring doubles. Just as students have committed math facts to 10 to memory, we will work to commit doubles facts to memory. Once students are confident with doubles fact, we will begin to explore the Doubles Plus 1 Strategy: “If I know 3+3=6, then I know 3+4=7”.

SCIENCE

It has been an exciting week of observing our mealworms. Students are so interested in their movements and growth. Some have even grown and shed their skin (molted). Students have been extremely caring and careful with these living creatures! Soon they will go into their pupa stage, where they will remain still and quiet as they change into Darkling Beetles.
